Slow getting started this season, partly the weather but mostly just lethargy ...
But I finally found myself headed north to Bartlett this weekend.
Pretty dubious about conditions on the ground once I got there; I had wanted to do some brushwhacking but the snow wasn't really deep enough to float over the rocks and snags.
And the river crossing I had in mind - forget it. Nowhere near frozen enough.
Decided I'd go up Black Cap. I didn't feel particularly ambitious, but seemed like I should do something.
I wasn't that excited about Black Cap, I've been up it quite a few times. It's a nice enough mountain, actually excellent, but in summer & fall it's almost a trivial walk.
Winter, however, is another story.

Mt Shaw, the highest of the Ossippee range. I was just up in the White Mountains a few days ago. The colors up north were pretty blah, and the drive long so I thought I'd try a little south. I like Mt Roberts, but wanted a change. Shaw, by way of some different trails, seemed a good choice.
Lower Bridle Path -> Faraway ->Upper Bridle Path -> Oak ridge Cutoff -> High Ridge -> Mt Shaw -> High Ridge -> Oak Ridge Cutoff -> Faraway -> Lower Bridle Path.

Not a big fan of getting up early, but I wanted to get to Zealand Pond in time to catch some early morning light. I'd heard colors were at peak there, as usual ahead of the rest of the state. So, despite still being a bit achy from mixing, pouring and setting concrete all day Saturday, and then going for a short hike Sunday, I managed to rouse myself when it was still dark Monday morning. Off I went.
